The main component of silica sol is nano-sized silica (SiO₂) particles, which are uniformly dispersed in water or organic solvents to form a stable colloidal solution. In addition, the silica sol system also contains the following auxiliary components to maintain the stability of the colloid:
1. Stabilizers: These are usually small amounts of acids or bases, such as sodium hydroxide, ammonia, or organic acids. Their function is to adjust the pH value of the solution, prevent the silica particles from agglomerating and settling, and ensure the storage stability of the silica sol.
2. Dispersion medium: Commercially available silica sols commonly use water as the dispersion medium (i.e., aqueous silica sols); some special models use organic solvents such as ethanol or isopropanol as the dispersion medium to suit different application scenarios.
