Silica sol (silica gel solution) plays several important roles in the glass industry, primarily through the chemical and physical properties of its nano-sized silica particles. The following are its main functions and mechanisms of action:
1. Enhancing Glass Surface Hardness and Abrasion Resistance
Principle: Nano-SiO₂ particles in silica sol can bond with the glass surface through high-temperature sintering or chemical reaction, forming a dense silicon-oxygen (Si-O-Si) network structure.
Applications: Commonly used in applications requiring high abrasion resistance, such as mobile phone screens and automotive glass. For example, coating with silica sol followed by heat treatment can increase the Mohs hardness of the glass surface to 6-7.
2. Improving Glass Chemical Stability
Corrosion Protection: Silica sol coatings fill the micropores on the glass surface, reducing the corrosion of glass by alkaline or acidic substances and extending its service life.
Example: Laboratory glassware and pharmaceutical glass bottles are often treated with silica sol to improve their acid and alkali resistance.
3. As an Adhesive or Intermediate Layer
Multilayer Glass Composites: In laminated glass (such as bulletproof glass), silica sol can act as an inorganic adhesive, enhancing the adhesion between the glass and the polymer layer (such as PVB).
Low-Temperature Bonding Advantages: Compared to traditional high-temperature welding, silica sol bonding can be completed at lower temperatures, saving energy and preventing glass deformation.
4. Optical Performance Control
Anti-Reflective Coating: By controlling the porosity and refractive index of silica sol, anti-reflective films can be prepared, improving the light transmittance of glass
(such as solar cell cover glass).
Anti-Fog Function: Hydrophilic silica sol coatings can reduce water vapor condensation, applicable to bathroom mirrors or refrigerator glass.
5. Other Special Functions
Self-Cleaning Coating: When combined with photocatalysts (such as TiO₂), silica sol coatings can decompose surface organic matter, achieving self-cleaning.
Conductive Coating: Silica sol incorporating conductive materials (such as ITO) can be used to prepare transparent conductive glass.
